Red Bean & Job's Tears Soup with Cane Sugar | A warm, unfussy summer pot

A warm bowl of red bean and job's tears soup, sweetened with cane sugar.

It is the kind of pot that asks for nothing except a little time. Adzuki red beans, job's tears, water, and a spoonful of sugar stirred in at the end. On a hot afternoon it fills the kitchen with a soft, toasty smell and gives you something warm to hold.

Nothing here is precise. This is a homey pot, cooked by feel, the way a grandmother would wave off the idea of measuring.

The sugar

What pulls the whole pot together goes in last. We stir in Ship Brand Powdered Sugarcane near the end and let it dissolve completely into the broth.

Powdered Sugarcane is a fine cane-sugar powder with a natural molasses aroma. It melts completely into a simmered soup for a warm, rounded sweetness that never turns heavy.

Because the powder is so fine, it slips straight into the hot soup without any graininess left behind. The colour deepens, the smell of cane rises off the surface, and the sweetness lands soft and rounded rather than sharp. Powdered Sugarcane is the sugar in the video.

Why this matters

Job's tears cooked plain can taste a little flat. Red beans on their own go earthy and dry at the edges. Cane sugar is the small turn that makes the pot feel finished: it rounds the beans, lifts the toasty note in the grains, and gives the broth its deep amber colour.

We reached for a powdered cane sugar here for one practical reason. A whole-lump or slab sugar would need coaxing to melt into a soup this thick, and you would be stirring long after the beans were ready. The powder dissolves on contact, so you sweeten to taste in the last minute and serve. That is the behind-the-scenes logic of the shoot: the least fuss, the most flavour, a sugar that disappears into the pot and leaves only its aroma.

A loose home method

No exact grams here, this is a pot to cook by feel.

  1. Rinse the job's tears and red beans. Soak them for an hour or two if you have the time, it shortens the simmer.
  2. Add both to a pot with plenty of water. Bring to a boil, then drop to a low flame and let it go, low and slow, until the beans are soft and the grains are plump and tender.
  3. Stir in Powdered Sugarcane to taste near the end, until it melts fully into the broth.
  4. Serve warm from the pot, or let it cool and keep it for later.

That is the whole thing. A quiet bowl to slow down with, on a warm day or a cool one.
