Hot Red Bean Boba Milk Tea – A Cozy Winter Drink Sweetened with Golden Slab Sugar & Red Sugar Powder

Dec 30, 2025Ada Lam

When winter arrives, nothing soothes the body and warms the heart like a cup of Hot Red Bean Bobo Milk Tea. This creamy, multi-layered drink combines soft simmered red beans, chewy bobo pearls, fragrant black tea, and warm milk—creating the perfect balance of sweetness, texture, and comfort.

What truly elevates this homemade version is the thoughtful use of two different Ship Brand sugars, each chosen to enhance a specific part of the recipe:

Golden Slab Sugar(冰片糖) for simmering red beans

This traditional slab sugar melts slowly and releases a gentle, caramel-kissed sweetness that penetrates the red beans without overpowering them. The result is soft, flavorful red beans with natural depth.

Red Sugar Powder(純正紅糖) for shaping chewy bobo pearls

Red Sugar Powder brings warmth, colour, and a mellow molasses-like aroma to the pearls. It mixes evenly with gelatin & water, giving you bouncy, springy bobo with a beautifully rich tone.

  • 30g Golden Slab Sugar(冰片糖)

  • 25g small tapioca pearls (sago)

  • 250g milk

For Boba Pearls

  • 600g water

  • 20g jelly powder (white jelly powder)

For assembly

  • Extra warm milk

How to Make Hot Red Bean Boba Milk Tea

1. Simmer red beans with Golden Slab Sugar

Add frozen red beans, Golden Slab Sugar, and sago into boiling water.
Simmer on low heat for 20 minutes until the beans soften, and the sago becomes half-transparent.
This slow cooking ensures the beans stay intact but creamy.

2. Add milk and simmer until creamy

Pour in 250g milk and continue to cook over low heat for 10 minutes.
The milk absorbs the sweetness and aroma, creating a rich, velvety red bean mixture.

3. Prepare boba pearls with Red Sugar Powder

Heat 600g of water with Red Sugar Powder until dissolved.
Add jelly powder and stir until entirely smooth—no lumps.
Pour into a mold and let it cool completely before unmolding.
The result: soft, glossy, chewy bobo pearls.

4. Assemble the drink

Spoon a generous layer of red bean milk mixture into a cup.
Add a splash of warm milk, then top with freshly unmolded bobo pearls.

5. Finish with hot black tea

Fill the cup with hot black tea.
As the tea meets the milk, the aroma instantly intensifies—deep, warm, and comforting.

6. Enjoy the warmth

Each sip offers:
✓ soft, creamy red bean
✓ chewy Q-texture bobo pearls
✓ warm milk
✓ fragrant black tea

A dessert drink that warms your hands, your stomach, and your mood.
